Event Rescheduling Notice

Event Rescheduling Notice

March 16, 2020

Dear Friends,
After careful review of the current health situation and after consultation with the experts, we have decided to close The Moviehouse for the moment, effective immediately.

It’s a very strange feeling for us to be closing our doors, even temporarily, as The Moviehouse has always served as the community campfire where we all gather in times of uncertainty. We will re-open as soon as our local and State health authorities say it is safe to do so, which hopefully, will be very soon. We’ll keep you updated via email and on our website and social media.

In the meantime, because we’ll all need an escape and will be unable to get out to the movies, we invite you to join us here on Facebook where we’ll be posting weekly reviews, and recommendations for interesting new films and classics you can watch and enjoy at home!

This is such a difficult and unusual time; we will get through this together but apart.

Spring is arriving, the sun is shining, the Robins have returned, and the buds are starting to burst, we are so lucky to live in this beautiful part of the world. Take a walk, breathe deeply, please embrace it as a community and support one another.

We are grateful for your support, wish you all well, and hope
this is behind us all very soon!

Carol Sadlon and the amazing staff of The Moviehouse!

#Anne Frank: Parallel Stories

#Anne Frank: Parallel Stories

Postponed pending reschedule.

Legendary actress Helen Mirren retraces the life of Anne Frank through the pages of her diary and introduces the viewer to five other women who, as young girls, were also deported to concentration camps during World War II.

Produced in cooperation with the Anne Frank Foundation, the event takes audiences into an exact reconstruction of Anne’s room in Amsterdam, part of the secret annex where the Frank family hid for two years before being discovered and deported to concentration camps. Anne’s writings vividly capture what was happening to a Europe in flames at the time, about Nazism, and her fears, hopes, and dreams. It also provides a context of past human experiences for understanding our own present and future through the experiences of the survivors who lived to tell their own parallel stories of persecution and deportation.

Antiquarian booksellers are part scholar, part detective and part businessperson, and their personalities and knowledge are as broad as the material they handle. They also play an underappreciated yet essential role in preserving history. The film takes viewers inside their small but fascinating world, populated by an assortment of obsessives, intellects, eccentrics, and dreamers, and features interviews with some of the most important dealers in the business, as well as prominent collectors, auctioneers, and writers. Both a loving celebration of book culture and serious exploration of the future of the book, the film also examines technology’s impact on the trade, the importance of books as physical objects, the decline of used and rare bookstores, collecting obsessions, and the relentless hunt for the next great find. Offering audiences a rare glimpse of many unique and remarkable objects, including the most expensive book ever sold, Da Vinci’s The Codex Leicester; handwritten Borges manuscripts; jeweled bindings; essential early hip-hop documents and more.

After the film DAN DWYER of Johnnycake Books will moderate a panel Q&A with DAN WECHSLER of Sanctuary Rare Books & a Producer of the film, HEATHER O’DONNELL Honey & Wax Booksellers & DAVID BERGMAN of David Bergman Rare Books. All of whom are featured in the film.

Exhibition on Screen: Easter in Art

Exhibition on Screen: Easter in Art

Directed by Phil Grabsky

Postponed pending reschedule.

The story of Christ’s death and resurrection has dominated western culture for the past 2000 years. It is perhaps the most significant historical event of all time, as recounted by the gospels but, equally, as depicted by the greatest artists in history. From the triumphant to the savage, the ethereal to the tactile, some of western civilization’s greatest artworks focus on this pivotal moment. This beautifully crafted film explores the Easter story as depicted in art, from the time of the early Christians to the present day. Shot on location in Jerusalem, United States and throughout Europe, the film explores the different ways artists have depicted the Easter story through the ages and thus depicts the history of us all.

The Mindfulness Movement: Special Screening + Q&A

Postponed pending reschedule.

Whether someone is just discovering mindfulness or has been practicing for years, they’re sure to learn something new and be inspired to share the benefits of mindfulness with others as THE MINDFULNESS MOVEMENT continues to grow.

From Executive Producers Deepak Chopra and Jewel, comes THE MINDFULNESS MOVEMENT, a feature documentary that examines the growing number of people throughout society who believe mindfulness – a peaceful quality of attention anyone can develop by simply focusing on the present moment in a non-judgmental way – is the key to creating a healthier, happier world. For them, mindfulness is the tool anyone can use to make more moments matter in their lives and to help create a more compassionate, caring, and ethical society. Featuring interviews with Deepak Chopra, Jewel, DanHarris, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Sharon Salzberg, George Mumford, Daniel Goleman and many more. The film follows the emotionally compelling stories of four main characters (Jewel, Dan Harris, Sharon Salzberg and George Mumford) who reveal their personal hardships and explain how mindfulness transformed their lives. Woven between these journeys are profiles of the leaders, history, and science behind the movement, as well as looks at the many places where mindfulness is already helping toimprove society, including schools (from inner-cities to Harvard Business School), Fortune 500 companies, police forces, prisons, network newsrooms, neuroscience laboratories, therapist offices, sports teams, military veterans groups, and the health care industry. This documentary is even an interactive experience since viewers will have two chances to grow.

Details to come on our panel.

Exhibition on Screen: Frida Kahlo

Exhibition on Screen: Frida Kahlo

Directed by Ali Ray

Tuesday, July 7, 7 PM
Sunday, July 12, 1 PM

This highly engaging film takes us on a journey through the life of one of the most prevalent female icons: Frida Kahlo. She was a prolific self-portraitist, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and, at times, tragic life. Guided with interviews, commentary and Frida’s own words, EXHIBITION ON SCREEN uncovers that this, however, was not a life defined by tragedy.

Featuring key exhibitions and interviews with world-renowned Kahlo curators, the film explores the extraordinary symbolism and themes in these personal canvases to seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo. Using cinema to take an up-close and intimate look at her works we examine how great an artist she can be considered. Displaying a treasure trove of color and a feast of vibrancy on screen, this personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life, men, women, politics, and her cultural heritage.

We might think we already know Frida Kahlo – the image of floral crowns, big brows and folk style clothing have made her a muse to generations – but what lies beneath the surface of this intensely passionate woman?
